Cotton gloves
You are the preview attendant at an auction house.
House rules require cotton gloves for handling works on paper, because skin oils can stain them. Minutes before the lot opens, Niko, a bidder, wants to handle a fragile antique map from the glass display case. Your senior colleague, Deja, has joined you.
The scene
Niko: I've read the report. Paper like this I have to feel, not look at.
Deja: Clean hands, thirty seconds. Some experts say that's gentler than gloves.
Niko: It's my savings. I don't bid on what I can't touch.
Deja: The seller wants it sold, too. Four minutes. It's your case, your call.
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and what would you say to Niko and Deja?
- 2How do you respond when someone senior encourages you to bend a rule you are responsible for?
What raters look for
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
