Scratch from the final

You are captain of a small kayak club.

The club's only racing kayak cracked today, the day before a regatta your four newest paddlers have trained for all season, and no other boat has turned up. On the dock, Qing, captain of a rival club, makes an offer while your teammate Monique listens.

The scene

Qing: Use our spare boat tomorrow. You'd sit out the final against us, of course.

Monique: Wait, we'd have to lose on purpose?

Qing: Not lose, step aside. That's just how a loan works between clubs, isn't it?

Monique: It feels like throwing a race. But our rookies earned tomorrow. Captain?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Qing and Monique?
  2. 2When does accepting a favor cost more than it is worth?
