Scene to read · Problem solving, Collaboration
Fifty each
You rent a room in a shared house with two housemates, Hideo and Bushra.
The washing machine, which belongs to the landlord, broke on Monday, and he says a replacement will take three or four weeks. In the laundry corner, your housemates have each made up their minds, and you would pay a third of any cost.
The scene
Hideo: There's a used one for one-fifty, delivered today. Fifty each and we're done.
Bushra: It's the landlord's machine. Pay once and he'll never fix anything again.
Hideo: The laundromat is two buses away. My back can't carry bags for a month.
Bushra: And I can't spare fifty for his job. So you're the tiebreaker.
The two questions
- 1What would you suggest to Hideo and Bushra?
- 2When a problem is someone else's responsibility to fix but you are the ones living with it, how do you decide whether to fix it yourselves?
What raters look for
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
- Collaboration
- Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
