Until somebody checks
You manage a small apartment building.
By the mailboxes, under a lost-cat flyer, Malia has just found out that Fadi, from down her hall, has been keeping her cat in his apartment for three days. Last month Fadi told you the cat often spends cold nights shut out on the fire escape; you never raised it with Malia.
The scene
Malia: You saw my flyers for three days and said nothing? Give her back today.
Fadi: She was shivering on the fire escape again. Fourth night this month.
Malia: She slips out the window. I work nights. That isn't neglect.
Fadi: I'm not handing her over until somebody checks. You're the manager.
The two questions
- 1What would you do today, and what would you say to Fadi and Malia?
- 2How do you act fairly when you have heard much more from one side of a dispute than the other?
What raters look for
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
