Final sale, one hour old
You volunteer at the register of a hospital gift shop.
Nkechi bought a phone charger here an hour ago and says it has stopped working; the box is torn and the cable is scuffed. A sign says electronics are final sale, a rule made after visitors kept swapping their own worn-out chargers for new ones. Gillian, the shift lead, is beside you at the counter, and the shop has no way to test it.
The scene
Nkechi: It quit within an hour. The ward calls this phone about my dad.
Gillian: I'm sorry, but that's the story we heard all last year.
Nkechi: I'm not asking for money. Just swap it for one that works.
Gillian: We can't test it, and it's scuffed. Your register. What do we tell her?
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and what would you say to Nkechi and Gillian?
- 2How do you decide when a rule that exists for a good reason should have an exception?
What raters look for
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
