Four on the floor
You captain an adult recreational basketball team.
Tonight's game decides whether your team makes the playoffs. Four of your players are in the gym; the other four are somewhere behind a highway closure. Pooja, a teammate, has been texting them. Nabil, the referee, walks over to the sideline with his clipboard.
The scene
Nabil: Captain, ten minutes. Start with four, or forfeit and appeal for a replay.
Pooja: They texted five minutes away. That was twenty minutes ago, and nobody's answering.
Nabil: Once you tip off, the result stands. Appeals aren't always granted.
Pooja: We could hold on with four until they show. What's the call?
The two questions
- 1What would you decide, and how would you explain it to your team?
- 2How do you make a decision when you cannot get the one piece of information you need?
What raters look for
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
