Scene to read · Problem solving, Ethics
Nobody counted at lunch
You organized your street's yard sale and answer for the takings.
At the end of the day the cash box is a hundred dollars short. Only two volunteers ran the cash table: Latoya, who is new, in the morning, and Farzana in the afternoon, with an hour together at lunch. Nobody counted the box when they swapped, and you were across the lot all day. You stand at the cash table with both of them.
The scene
Latoya: I counted everything I took. It's the afternoon rush when it got sloppy.
Farzana: Five years I've run this table. You broke a hundred at noon. I watched.
Latoya: And I gave the right change. You're blaming me because I'm new.
Farzana: I'm not blaming anyone. The money's still gone. So what happens now?
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and what would you say to Latoya and Farzana?
- 2How do you handle a problem fairly when you may never find out who caused it?
What raters look for
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
