Scene to read · Problem solving, Equity
The lab closes at five
You are the only receptionist on duty at a small clinic.
The office printer has jammed. Six people in the waiting room need paper lab slips for the testing lab next door, which stops taking anyone at five, in twelve minutes; its phone is busy. On the one working computer, either your colleague Marcelo copies each slip by hand or people come behind the counter one by one to photograph it, as Kenneth, who is waiting, suggests. There is not time for both.
The scene
Marcelo: I'll handwrite them. It treats everyone the same, but the lab might refuse them.
Kenneth: They took a phone photo last month. Let me snap your screen.
Marcelo: Two people have no phone. And behind this counter you'd see everyone's names.
Kenneth: I've fasted since last night. Somebody choose, please.
The two questions
- 1What would you do in the next twenty minutes, and why?
- 2When you have to act without knowing which option will work, how do you choose?
What raters look for
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
