Two elevators and a bridge
You hand out maps and wheelchairs at a welcome post two afternoons a week.
Visiting ends at eight sharp. The rule at your post in the hospital lobby is that it is never left empty, since people arriving unsteady on their feet come to it first, and your partner is on a break. Kavya, 70, has hurried up to you; Elsa, who answers phones at the next desk, is listening.
The scene
Kavya: Seven East, they said. Visiting ends in ten minutes, and I've gone in circles twice.
Elsa: It's two elevators and a bridge. Honestly, the signs are hopeless.
Kavya: Could you just walk me there? My sister's expecting me.
Elsa: You're not to leave that post, you know that. And I can't leave these phones.
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and what would you say to Kavya?
- 2When a rule gets in the way of helping the person in front of you, how do you decide what to do?
What raters look for
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
