A hundred each

You are spending a weekend at a hostel with a group of six friends.

In the hostel common room, with receipts spread on the table, Makena is settling accounts, including the six-hundred-dollar deposit she paid for an August cabin trip that was canceled when the cabin flooded. Da-eun had pulled out of that trip in June, after the deposit was paid. They have asked you to help sort it out.

The scene

Makena: I booked for six because six of you said yes. That's a hundred each.

Da-eun: I pulled out in June. I wasn't even going to be there.

Makena: After I'd paid. I'm not eating your share for doing everyone a favor.

Da-eun: And I'm not paying for a trip I'd already left. You're neutral. What's fair?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you suggest to Makena and Da-eun?
  2. 2When a shared plan fails, how should the loss be divided among the people involved?
