Which email goes out
You share an apartment with two roommates, and the lease is in your name.
This morning you found droppings and a chewed cereal box in the kitchen cupboards. The lease bills tenants for pest treatment caused by poor housekeeping, and the landlord wrote to you last month about trash left out. Your roommates, Yusuf and Chul, are looking into the open cupboards with you.
The scene
Yusuf: Email him now, with photos, as it is. Hiding the mess is how trust goes.
Chul: As it is? With that trash bag there? That's a four-hundred-dollar confession.
Yusuf: It was our bag. He'll find out if the exterminator looks around anyway.
Chul: So we clean first, then report. Same mice, no blame. Which email goes out?
The two questions
- 1What would you decide, and how would you explain it to Yusuf and Chul?
- 2When is it reasonable to tidy up your own part in a problem before you report it?
What raters look for
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
