Monthly, not yearly

You sit on the membership committee of the housing cooperative where you live.

Tonight's room offers go out in an hour. You have just noticed that the ranking spreadsheet threw out everyone who typed their income per month instead of per year, perhaps a dozen people, and there is no time to re-rank them. Several of those accepted must give their current landlords notice by midnight. At the committee table, Douglas and Cristobal look up from the offer emails.

The scene

Douglas: Send them. Eight people need an answer tonight to give notice.

Cristobal: Next cycle is four months. We'd be handing out rooms on a broken list.

Douglas: We can't even tell who'd have ranked higher. Maybe nobody.

Cristobal: Maybe everybody. You found it, so you call it. Send or hold?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do in the next hour, and why?
  2. 2When an error is found at the last minute, how do you weigh the people who would be hurt by a delay against those hurt by going ahead?

What raters look for

Problem solving
Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
Ethics
Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
