Smaller bowls or bigger bills

You are the newest server at a small noodle shop.

The shop is owned by Margaux and her younger business partner, Manoj. Their main supplier has raised prices by a third. Before opening, the two of them stand at the counter with the menu between them.

The scene

Margaux: Raise the bowl a dollar fifty. Regulars grumble, but they'll respect the honesty.

Manoj: Or keep the price and serve a little less. Most people won't even notice.

Margaux: They'll notice, and feel tricked. Half of them are on fixed incomes, though.

Manoj: You hear them at the tables. Which would they mind less?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you tell Margaux and Manoj, and why?
  2. 2How do you weigh being kind to people now against what is better for them, or for a relationship, in the long run?
