Scene to read · Problem solving, Empathy

One seat short

You staff the reception desk at a care home on weekends.

Today's minibus outing to the lake is full: nine residents, the leader, Elif, and one new helper on her first day. Stanley, 88, turned down a place last week but has come to the entrance this morning in his coat. Elif, who speaks English as a second language, steps off the bus to talk with him beside your desk.

The scene

Stanley: I said no last week. Today's our anniversary. We fished that lake forty years.

Elif: Every seat is taken, Stanley. Only the new helper's seat could be free.

Stanley: I walk fine. I'd be a help, not a burden.

Elif: Alone with ten by water, I worry. But I hate saying no. What do you think?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Elif and Stanley?
  2. 2When there is not enough for everyone, how should it be decided who goes without?

What raters look for

Problem solving
Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
