Scene to read · Problem solving, Ethics
One tank of fuel
You are the tenant volunteer who runs your building's only working snowblower.
After a heavy overnight storm, you have about an hour of fuel, enough to clear one route. One resident has a ride coming to the side door at nine for an urgent medical appointment. In the mail room, the superintendent, Zuberi, and a neighbor, Octavio, both stop you.
The scene
Zuberi: Side path first. Her ride comes at nine, and she can't miss it.
Octavio: Forty households can't get out the front. People have shifts. Some have kids.
Zuberi: Front takes the whole tank. Then she's stuck.
Octavio: And if you do the side, we're all stuck. It's your machine. Which way?
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and why?
- 2How should a limited resource be divided between one person with an urgent need and many people with ordinary ones?
What raters look for
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
