Before the room closes
You are a hospital volunteer who manages the key to the only quiet room on this floor.
In a hospital waiting corridor, Cordelia, 52, wants silence to rest and pray. Corinna, 65, needs somewhere to settle her restless grandson, who is with a relative nearby. The quiet room closes in fifteen minutes for scheduled maintenance; neither expects a few minutes inside to help much. You cannot extend access, and another suitable space has not been confirmed.
The scene
Cordelia: I asked first. Splitting fifteen minutes won't give me much quiet.
Corinna: I understand, but he's overwhelmed, and the waiting room isn't helping.
Cordelia: Could someone find another space while I use this one briefly?
Corinna: Could they look for you instead? Moving him twice sounds harder.
The two questions
- 1How would you allocate the remaining room time, and what would you say to Cordelia and Corinna?
- 2Tell us about a time you had to divide a limited space or resource between people who each had a fair claim. How did you handle it?
What raters look for
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
