Across the street
You are one of five volunteers who review your town's budget each spring.
Stefan runs the last family-owned furniture store on Main Street; he pays property tax, employs six people and takes on two apprentices a year. He tells your group that the charity resale shop across the street pays no property tax, prices below him, and is slowly closing him down. The charity replies that the exemption is what funds its job training for people leaving homelessness, and that its stock is donated. Three options are on the table: keep the tax break for nonprofit shops, end it, or tax only the part of a building used for retail. Yours is the deciding voice.
The two questions
- 1Which option would you support, and why?
- 2Describe a time you had to be fair to two people or groups who each had a good claim. What did you do?
What raters look for
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
