One field, two needs

You are the volunteer field coordinator at a city park field office, and you have authority to assign field time today.

Saturday at the park field office. Eliezer, 56, coaches a beginners' clinic whose first session starts at ten. Elio, 26, captains a league team with a makeup match due before the season cutoff. Both hold valid bookings for the same field, and no other field is free.

The scene

Eliezer: Eleven newcomers may not return if we move their first session.

Elio: Today's makeup match is our last chance, or we have to forfeit.

Eliezer: Could we start on half, then clear it for your match?

Elio: That might work, but we'd need enough time for the full match.

The two questions

  1. 1How would you settle the double booking, and why?
  2. 2How do you decide between two groups who each have a legitimate claim on the same limited resource?
