A cup of water
You rent an apartment with your roommate, Cam.
At eleven at night, water starts dripping slowly from a corner of your kitchen ceiling. The upstairs tenant is away. After a run of midnight calls about small things, the landlord now charges two hundred dollars for callouts that turn out not to be emergencies. Mr. Yates from downstairs has come up to look, and your roommate Cam is holding a bucket.
What's said in the scene
Mr. Yates: A slow drip can be a full pipe by morning. I'd call him tonight.
Cam: Or it stops in an hour. It's a cup of water.
Mr. Yates: My ceiling is right under this one, you know.
Cam: I can't cover two hundred dollars this month. It's your call. Phone him, or wait?
The two questions
- 1What would you do?
- 2How do you weigh a certain small cost against an uncertain larger risk?
What raters look for
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
