Scene to read · Problem solving, Empathy

Which notice should residents trust?

You are the volunteer who administers both the supper club group chat and the building-wide group chat.

After a tenants' meeting, Roscoe, 37, the supper club founder, and Rurik, 50, a building committee member, sit on the lobby bench. New residents accidentally added to the club chat mistook an in-joke about kitchen repairs for an official closure notice. Meanwhile, an actual kitchen closure was posted only in the building chat, so club members missed it and prepared food they couldn't serve.

The scene

Rurik: One chat would mean nobody misses closures and wastes another evening cooking.

Roscoe: But mixing our jokes with official notices makes everything look equally reliable.

Rurik: Separate chats haven't worked either. People shouldn't have to check both daily.

Roscoe: Could you keep notices consistent without making every conversation a committee announcement?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you change about the two chats, and how would you address the confusion already caused?
  2. 2How do you decide whether to consolidate communication channels or improve how information moves between them?

What raters look for

Problem solving
Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
