Under sixteen

You sit on the volunteer board of a youth swim club.

A hurtful post about one swimmer spread among teammates online last month. Dagmar, a parent on the board, proposes banning members under sixteen from all club-related social media, including the group chat where coaches post practice changes. Several parents support her. Others point out that the chat is how many swimmers keep up with the team and with friends they see only at the pool, and that a ban would simply move the unkindness somewhere no adult can see it. The board asks for your recommendation.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you recommend, and why?
  2. 2How should adults balance protecting young people from harm with letting them take part in the places where their friendships happen?
