The loading zone
You are trying to get a rent relief application in before the county's cutoff.
The application has to be signed at the counter by both tenants, and the county office stops taking them in twelve minutes. You have just pulled up outside in the car you need for tonight's delivery shift; the only open curb is a tow-away loading zone. Darnell, your roommate and co-applicant, who does not drive, is beside you, and Ilse, a security guard, walks over from the entrance.
The scene
Ilse: Can't park here. They tow fast, and the garage is half a mile back.
Darnell: Half a mile is the deadline gone. Leave it and run.
Ilse: It's two hundred to get it back, and the yard closes at five.
Darnell: Worth it. If the window's shut, we say the bus broke down. Nobody checks.
The two questions
- 1What would you do in the next few minutes, and why?
- 2When, if ever, does a good reason justify breaking a rule or bending the truth?
What raters look for
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
