Borderline forecast at the trailhead

You are a longtime member of a hiking group, and the leader has asked you to help decide whether today's hike goes ahead.

It is 7 a.m. in the trailhead shelter; Davit, 42, is the group leader, and Davina, 29, is a longtime member. The long-planned all-day hike has a borderline forecast now. A few hikers are waiting by their cars, and the leader has asked for your vote.

The scene

Davit: The forecast turned overnight. Afternoon storms are possible; I suggest cancelling.

Davina: We've planned for months. Shorten the loop, returning early if skies change.

Davit: A few look nervous; they haven't said much to either of us.

Davina: Then ask them directly. It's your group; I'd like your call.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and how would you help the group decide?
  2. 2How do you decide when a plan someone has worked hard on should be changed or dropped?

What raters look for

Problem solving
Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
