The sign points east

You are a hospital volunteer who has just noticed that the sign at this junction points the wrong way.

On the second floor, two corridors meet at a junction. A sign sends visitors to the east wing, but the west wing is the right way. Facilities will fix it next week. Briony, your volunteer supervisor, is here with Cadmus, a visitor who says he has arrived at the wrong end of the building three times today.

The scene

Cadmus: That sign sent me east again. Third time today. Anyone checking?

Briony: Sorry. Facilities fixes it next week; volunteers can't post their own notices.

Cadmus: Next week? People will keep walking the wrong way until then?

Briony: Yes. I must cover the front desk now, so it's your call.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do at this junction, and why?
  2. 2Tell us about a time you had to choose between a quick fix and following the proper procedure. What did you decide, and what would you do differently now?

What raters look for

Problem solving
Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
Self-awareness
