The wrong call
You referee in an adult recreational soccer league.
In tonight's semifinal you awarded a late penalty that decided the game. Watching a spectator's video afterwards, you can see that you got it wrong. On the sideline, Marco, the losing captain, and Jill, the league coordinator, come over.
The scene
Marco: That call ended our season. You saw the video. Just admit it.
Jill: The result stands, Marco. Referees make mistakes.
Marco: Then don't put the same ref on the final.
Jill: I have nobody else for tomorrow. Are you up for it, or should I cancel?
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Marco and to Jill?
- 2How do you recover your confidence after a mistake that affected other people?
What raters look for
- Resilience
- Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
