Five of ten came back

You coach an adult learn-to-swim class at a community pool with Hiroshi.

In last week's first session you had the beginners put their faces in the water and push off from the wall. Tonight only five of the ten have come back. On the pool deck before class, Ataahua, 44, one of the five, walks over to you and Hiroshi.

What's said in the scene

Ataahua: I nearly didn't come back. Last week felt like a test I failed.

Hiroshi: But you did it! My coaches pushed way harder. That's how I learned.

Ataahua: You were kids. Some of us have been scared for forty years.

Hiroshi: Go easy and they never leave the wall. Same plan tonight?

The two questions

  1. 1How would you respond to Ataahua and Hiroshi, and what would you do with tonight's class?
  2. 2How do you tell the difference between pushing people enough to grow and pushing them away?

What raters look for

Resilience
Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
