Written scenario · Resilience, Self-awareness

Three good years, one bad review

You work at a small engineering firm.

For three years your reviews called you one of the strongest people on the team. Your new manager, Haruto, has just given you your first poor review. He writes that you skip the required peer check on your drawings. That is true: your old manager waived it for you, although the check exists because an unchecked error once cost the firm a client. He also calls you resistant to feedback, citing one meeting in which you believe you simply asked a question. You have a week to sign the review or add a written response.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and what would you say to Haruto?
  2. 2How do you separate the part of a criticism that is fair from the part that is not?

What raters look for

Resilience
Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
Self-awareness
Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
