Scene to read · Resilience, Self-awareness

A list on a wall

You play for an adult field hockey club.

After eight seasons on the first team, you found your name on the reserves list this morning, with no word from the coach. On the clubhouse steps, your friend and former teammate Eun-ji is angry on your behalf when Esperanza, the reserves' captain, comes over.

The scene

Esperanza: Honestly, I'm glad we've got you. Nobody's taught us how to defend.

Eun-ji: Eight seasons, and a list on a wall. I'd hand back the jersey today.

Esperanza: I get that it stings. Practice is Thursday at seven.

Eun-ji: If you stay, they learn they can do this to anyone. I'd walk with you. Will you?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you decide, and what would you say to Eun-ji and Esperanza?
  2. 2How do you tell the difference between standing on principle and protecting your pride?

What raters look for

Resilience
Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
Self-awareness
Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
