Scene to read · Resilience, Empathy
The route everyone wants
You are a climber who had a frightening slip last month and is the strongest lead climber on your rope team.
Thursday evening at a climbing gym, near the bouldering area. Demelza, the trip organizer, and Demian, your longtime climbing partner, are planning Saturday. The group has wanted the planned route for a year. They have asked you to decide whether to lead it.
The scene
Demelza: Saturday's the route we've trained toward all year; you're our best lead.
Demian: You've looked careful since that slip, not scared. That's different, I think.
Demelza: We can switch to the easier climb, honestly. Nobody would blame you.
Demian: Maybe, but the group's waited so long. What do you want?
The two questions
- 1What would you do about Saturday's route, and what would you say to Demelza and Demian?
- 2How do you decide when to return to something that has shaken your confidence, and when to hold back?
What raters look for
- Resilience
- Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
