Scene to read · Resilience, Professionalism

Three in one week

You are in your first week waiting tables at a busy restaurant.

You have just dropped a full tray of dinners, your third spill this week, in view of the whole dining room. At the server station, Ji-woo, the head server who trained you, is re-entering the order when Fredrik, the customer whose meal it was, walks over.

The scene

Fredrik: Please don't worry about it. I waited tables once. Everybody drops a few.

Ji-woo: That's kind. But it's three this week, and the kitchen's remaking six plates.

Fredrik: First weeks are rough. Give it a month.

Ji-woo: Honestly, this job may not be for you. Finish tonight, or stop here?

The two questions

  1. 1How would you respond to Ji-woo and Fredrik, and what would you do next?
  2. 2How do you tell the difference between a rough start and a sign that something is not right for you?
