Written scenario · Self-awareness, Communication
The friendly one
You lead a team of six at a design agency.
You have always seen yourself as the friendly one: you joke, speak directly and answer messages within minutes. In this year's anonymous survey, two comments call you intimidating and say people hesitate to disagree with you. You do not know who wrote them. Eun-ji, a fellow team lead you trust, says she is not surprised: several of your team are new graduates or come from workplaces where nobody contradicts a senior, and your quick, blunt replies may land differently than you intend. Your team meeting is tomorrow.
The two questions
- 1What would you do with this feedback, and would you raise it with your team?
- 2How much should a person change the way they communicate when others experience them differently from how they see themselves?
What raters look for
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
