The rule we all voted for

You are one of three voting members of a community robotics team that builds in a university makerspace.

The team's rule, written after a late part cost it last year's competition, benches anyone who misses the build deadline. Rowan missed Friday's because she was looking after her grandfather after his operation. At the 3D printer bench, captain Ziad and Rowan have split the vote, and yours decides.

The scene

Ziad: Rowan, I'm sorry about your grandfather. But we all voted for this rule, you included.

Rowan: I know. I finished the arm Sunday night, and it works.

Ziad: And if I bend it once, the deadline means nothing next time.

Rowan: Then it's a tie. Yours is the vote that decides.

The two questions

  1. 1How would you vote, and what would you say to Rowan and Ziad?
  2. 2Describe a time a rule you had agreed to was applied to someone in a hard situation. What did you do?
