Both reach for the hammer

You are in charge of hanging your photography club's annual show.

Guests arrive at seven, forty minutes from now. Thirty prints must be hung, and someone must staff the check-in table. Aleksander, who speaks English as a second language, helped choose the photos and knows the layout; Ifeoma has worked check-in at every event for two years. At the gallery wall, both reach for the hammer.

The scene

Aleksander: I know the order by heart. With me it is twenty minutes.

Ifeoma: And I've sat at that table for two years. I joined to do this part.

Aleksander: Is true. But tonight is not good night for learning.

Ifeoma: There's never a good night. That's how I end up at the table. So?

The two questions

  1. 1How would you split the work, and what would you say to each of them?
  2. 2Describe a time you had to divide tasks when more than one person wanted the same job. How did you decide?

What raters look for

Collaboration
Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
Communication
Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
