Tables and sign-in sheets

You are the team lead for setup at a neighborhood cultural fair, and you assign the volunteers' tasks.

It's early morning, and the fair opens in two hours. Philomena has hauled folding tables for an hour. Piers, a fellow volunteer, has just said his bad back makes him better suited to the sign-in sheets.

The scene

Philomena: I've carried tables since six, Piers. Could you take a few?

Piers: My back's acting up. I'd prefer sign-in, but I'm not sure.

Philomena: Sign-in means sitting with coffee. I'm exhausted; half the tables remain.

Piers: That's fair, I guess. You're the lead; decide how we split.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do as team lead, and why?
  2. 2Tell us about a time you had to divide work among people with different abilities or limits. How did you decide what was fair?

What raters look for

Collaboration
Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
