Written scenario · Collaboration, Equity
Only the figures
You are a student in a university microbiology lab course.
Your lab bench must hand in a joint report in ten days. Sialei, a mature student for whom English is a third language and who writes it slowly, asks to prepare all the figures and data tables and leave the written sections to the rest of you; her figures last time were the best in the class. Another member objects that the course exists to teach scientific writing, that writing is the hardest part, and that everyone should draft an equal section. Both have turned to you to settle it.
The two questions
- 1How would you settle it, and how would you explain your decision to them both?
- 2Describe a time a group you were in had to decide what a fair share of the work was. What did you do?
What raters look for
- Collaboration
- Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
