The tied committee
You chair the volunteer committee of a community garden.
The committee must decide how to spend a small grant. Half the members want raised beds so older gardeners can keep planting; the other half want a tool shed that everyone would use. The vote is tied, the deadline to spend the grant is in two weeks, and two long-time volunteers have said they will quit if their option loses.

The two questions
- 1How would you move the committee toward a decision?
- 2What makes a group decision feel fair to the people whose option was not chosen?
What raters look for
- Collaboration
- Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
