Scene to read · Collaboration, Empathy

Hand or machine

You are the youngest member of a community quilting circle.

The circle's charity quilt is due at a hospice auction on Saturday. Rei, who founded the circle forty years ago, is quilting it by hand and is about half done. Clifford has brought his machine to the craft room tonight.

The scene

Rei: Every quilt we've given was hand-finished. People bid on those stitches.

Clifford: They bid on finished quilts. By machine, I'm done tonight. By hand, we miss Saturday.

Rei: Then we stay late. I've done it before, at your age.

Clifford: Let the young one break the tie. Hand or machine?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Rei and Clifford?
  2. 2Tell us about a time you were caught between the way things had always been done and a new way. What did you do?

What raters look for

Collaboration
Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
