Scene to read · Collaboration, Ethics
Describe it as ours
You write grant applications at a small nonprofit, and tonight you are working with Fatou, a new junior co-writer.
The grant is due in an hour and would pay two staff salaries; the funder supports only groups already operating a tutoring program. A partner group has run one for three years, using your nonprofit's tutors and room, under the partner's name. Its director is on a flight. Ingrid, your director, leans over the boardroom table.
The scene
Ingrid: Call it our joint tutoring program. Our tutors, our room. One hour left.
Fatou: It's their program, though. Shouldn't they sign off before we say joint?
Ingrid: She's on a flight until midnight. She'd say yes. Two salaries ride on this.
Fatou: I'll write whatever you two decide. So which is it?
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Ingrid, and what would you write?
- 2When you work closely with a partner, how do you decide what counts as your own work?
What raters look for
- Collaboration
- Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
