Who gets the study guide?
You are a member of a five-person study group and a friend of both Abel and Abner.
At a library table before tomorrow's chemistry quiz, Abel, age 61, a returning student and mid-year transfer, asks Abner, 31, for your group's guide because his previous college taught topics in a different order. The jointly authored guide mixes checked explanations with unresolved drafts. After previous additions disrupted study sessions with editing and clarification requests, the group agreed to stay small; three members are absent.
The scene
Abel: My old college covered things differently. Could I use your guide tonight?
Abner: Some sections still need checking. We're trying to study tonight, too.
Abel: I don't need polished notes, just something connecting these topics for me.
Abner: What could we share tonight without having to check the whole thing?
The two questions
- 1What would you say or do in this moment, and why?
- 2Tell us about a time you had to balance a group's way of working with one person's need for access or support. What did you do?
What raters look for
- Collaboration
- Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
