Twelve costumes, one name
You volunteer in the costume shop of a community theater.
Lourdes, the costume coordinator, has just thanked you in front of the cast for twelve alterations finished overnight. Eitan, a volunteer in his first week since moving to the country, did the sewing while you ran fittings; he asked you not to correct her, since he cannot take paid work yet and wants no attention. The cast has gone back on stage; he stands beside you. You need the paid assistant hours for tuition.
The scene
Lourdes: Twelve alterations overnight, on top of a week of fittings. I don't know how you did it.
Eitan: The cast looked very happy.
Lourdes: They did. Eitan, this is who to learn from.
Eitan: Yes. I am learning.
Lourdes: The board should pay for that. Can I give them your name tonight?
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Lourdes, and when?
- 2Describe a time you were given credit that belonged, at least partly, to someone else. What did you do?
What raters look for
- Collaboration
- Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
