Washed out

You are a volunteer on a trail maintenance crew.

The crew spent the past week rebuilding a hillside section of a popular path, and last night's rain washed all of it out. The rest of the tired crew is waiting down at the trucks. At the trailhead sign, the crew leader, Rosemary, and Kiran, a longtime volunteer, disagree; you are the only other person who worked every day this week.

The scene

Rosemary: We rebuild, with better drains. People have walked that route sixty years.

Kiran: It's washed out three times in five years. Let it go. Cut a new line.

Rosemary: A new line is two seasons. Half this crew won't come back for that.

Kiran: Or to watch it wash out again. You dug all week. Which one?

The two questions

  1. 1How would you respond, knowing the crew will hear which of them you supported?
  2. 2Describe a time a group you were part of lost a lot of work and had to decide whether to start over. What was your role?

What raters look for

Collaboration
Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
Resilience
Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
