The pickup rule has changed
You are a new school office staff member, asked by your supervisor to explain the changed pickup procedure to a parent at the counter.
It is Friday at the school office counter. Ashwin, the office administrator, is 56, and Atif, a parent, is 26. Starting Monday, the school's written after-care policy replaces its informal arrangement allowing thirty-minute late pickups; Ashwin has asked you to explain the change and available options to Atif.
The scene
Ashwin: Starting Monday, late pickups need after-care enrollment instead of our informal arrangement.
Atif: My shift ends at five-thirty, so I need that extra half hour.
Ashwin: I know this is difficult. Our new colleague can explain the options.
Atif: Please be straight with me: what can I arrange before Monday?
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Atif, and how would you explain the change while helping with the short notice?
- 2Tell us about a time you had to explain an unwelcome change or rule to someone. How did you handle it?
What raters look for
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
