The sheet no longer counts

You are a shift lead at a warehouse and have been asked to introduce a new scheduling app.

Under the app, shifts open on Sunday night and go to whoever claims them first. Younger staff love it. Several long-serving workers distrust it and still expect shifts to be offered by seniority on the paper sheet. After the first week three people have no shifts, among them Adriana, who has worked here for decades and says, politely, that nobody told her the sheet no longer counted. The younger staff who claimed those shifts followed the new rules and have planned around them. Next week's schedule opens tomorrow.

The two questions

  1. 1How would you handle this week's shifts, and what would you say to the team?
  2. 2What makes a change feel fair to the people who were comfortable with the old way?

What raters look for

Communication
Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
Collaboration
Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
