Scene to read · Empathy, Problem solving
Two days, no answer
You are a student working the overnight front desk of a college residence hall.
You are on shift with another student worker, Yeon. Visiting hours ended at eleven, a rule meant to protect residents' privacy, and desk staff may not even confirm who lives in the building. At midnight Iman comes in from the parking lot. Her son, a sophomore, has not picked up his phone in two days.
The scene
Iman: Two days, no answer. I drove three hours. Let me knock.
Yeon: I'm sorry, ma'am. No visitors after eleven. We can't even confirm who lives here.
Iman: He's my son. What if something's wrong and you sent me away?
Yeon: He's also an adult who may not want visitors. You're senior tonight. Your call.
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and what would you say to Iman?
- 2Describe a time you had to follow a rule while someone in front of you was clearly distressed. How did you handle it?
What raters look for
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
