The bare planters
You live two doors from an older neighbor and have noticed a change on your street.
For years Mrs. Alvarez, a neighbor in her seventies, tended the shared planter bed in front of your row of houses. This spring it has stayed bare, and she has not said why. Other neighbors have started to mutter about how it looks. You could quietly water and plant it yourself, knock on her door to ask how she is, or leave it alone. You do not know whether she would welcome help or feel pushed aside.
The two questions
- 1What would you do about the planters and about your neighbor, and why?
- 2Describe a time you offered help to someone without being sure they wanted it. How did you decide what to do, and what happened?
What raters look for
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
- Motivation
- Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
