Scene to read · Empathy, Communication
By the third one
You are one of two moderators of your running club's online group.
You moderate the group with Chiamaka. Before tonight's run, your close friend Frank shows you both three anonymous comments under his race photo joking about his body. The group has two hundred members and a history of blowups whenever posts are removed. The three of you are at the bench where the club meets.
The scene
Frank: 'Built for comfort, not speed.' Three like that. I almost stayed home tonight.
Chiamaka: Half the club jokes like that about themselves, Frank. Where would we stop deleting?
Frank: Maybe it's nothing. I don't want everyone knowing it got to me.
Chiamaka: Exactly. Deleting tells the whole group it stung. So, co-mod, what do we do?
The two questions
- 1What would you do about the comments, and what would you say to Frank and Chiamaka?
- 2Describe a time you had to act on something that hurt a person close to you while also being fair to a wider group.
What raters look for
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
