Scene to read · Empathy, Problem solving
The baby comes in April
You have acted with an amateur theater company for years.
In the dressing room after rehearsal, Sakura, who chairs the company's board until June, has asked your castmate Nonoy to direct the fall musical, the company's biggest production. Nonoy and his wife are expecting their first baby in the spring, when planning begins. The board votes on a director this week.
The scene
Sakura: Nobody else can hold eighty people together. Without you, I fear for the show.
Nonoy: I've wanted this for ten years. But the baby comes in April.
Sakura: Babies sleep. We'd give you an assistant. Next year the board may not ask.
Nonoy: You know us both, and you know this club. Should I take it?
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Nonoy and Sakura?
- 2Describe a time you helped someone think through a choice between two things they cared about. How did you approach it?
What raters look for
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
