Passes are personal
You cross the bay each morning on a personal monthly pass.
Two minutes before the last morning sailing, Hala, a woman in her seventies whom you do not know, stops you at the ferry terminal turnstiles. She left her wallet at home, the ticket window is shuttered and the machine is out of order. Lior, who works the gate, stands beside you both.
The scene
Hala: Please, my husband's surgery is at nine. Tap your card for me?
Lior: Passes are personal, ma'am. Shared ones get canceled. Too many were being resold.
Hala: I can't miss it. The next boat is not until noon.
Lior: I can't wave anyone through, and I'd have to log it. Two minutes.
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and why?
- 2When is it right to break a rule for someone in need, knowing the rule exists for a good reason?
