Scene to read · Empathy, Motivation
Oren's chess club
You are a member of a community chess club advising Fintan, the vice-chair, who has proposed forming a small shared committee.
After a community chess club session, you meet treasurer Fiorella and vice-chair Fintan. Oren, the founder, has already left. Now in his eighties, he has run the club informally for decades without naming a successor. Fintan wants your advice before bringing a proposal for a shared committee to members.
The scene
Fiorella: Fintan, a committee sounds sensible, but Oren calls this club his life's work.
Fintan: I know. But he's never named anyone to take over, and that worries me.
Fiorella: Raise it gently, or he'll hear that we're pushing him out.
Fintan: Waiting leaves the club without a plan. Do you want me to speak to him first?
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and why?
- 2Tell us about a time you had to change something that someone else had built or cared deeply about. How did you approach it?
What raters look for
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
- Motivation
- Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
