Scene to read · Empathy, Professionalism
With you it is nice
You live in an apartment building and are doing laundry on a weeknight.
You have a presentation at nine tomorrow and have not started the slides. In the building's laundry room with your roommate, Walter, you meet Fatima, 79, a neighbor you have helped fold laundry three evenings this week. Her son lives ten minutes away.
The scene
Fatima: Ah, you are here again, good. My hands are bad tonight. You fold the sheets with me?
Walter: Your presentation's at nine, and you haven't started the slides.
Fatima: My son says call him. But he is tired. With you it is nice, we talk.
Walter: It's the fourth night this week. Up to you.
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Fatima, and what would you do tonight?
- 2Describe a time you had to set a limit with someone you wanted to help. How did you do it?
What raters look for
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
